History of Larkspur Colorado

In its beginning Larkspur was home to 2 lumber yards. The hardworking people made railroad ties, telegraph poles and firewood for the region. The town was named by Elizabeth Hunt for its many Larkspur flowers that grow wild in the area. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad came to Larkspur in 1871. This boosted the lumber sales and brought residents of Colorado Springs and Denver to town for time away from the big city. Mining also took hold as gypsum, sandstone and potash were discovered in Larkspur. So beautiful and peaceful was the town Kit Carson even paid a visit. Stephen Long and his expedition came through in 1820 and found many flowers on Raspberry Mountain not yet cataloged in there records. The local ranch of J.A. Hunt recently sold a conservation easement to Douglas County assuring that part of the area would be forever unchanged. The ranch will remain as a working cattle ranch as it has done for the last 140 years.
